By now, it is clearly explained that God created this universe and he gave life to it by weaving the net of illusion into it. This illusion is what makes every change in the universe including the earth. This itself makes us breathe and drink and eat. We are bound by it.

Now Krishna says that this illusion binds us to it using these types of chains. One may be called the good, the other may be called the bad and the last may be called the worse.

We are forced to choose one of these chains so as to live in the illusion. We can’t live outside of illusion because that’s the only option we have got. Hence we should choose which chain to bind us to the net of life.

These chains are nothing but our characters. We may have good character, bad or worse characters.

Naturally from the meaning of the names of these three chains, we would say we want the good chain or good character. The properties of good character is it always makes us do good things and to help others. The bad character forces us to do good things with an intention to get something in return. The worse character forces us to do bad things. It’s rare that we have only one character in us. Usually we possess all these in certain proportions in ourselves. Then at some times, the good character in us surpass the bad character and in some other times the bad will surpass the good. Similarly the relationship between good and worse and bad and worse. This means that we do some very good activities some times and in some other times we do very bad things.

It’s God who created these three types of characters in human beings. Our job is actually not to be just good but to overcome these three characters. We shall not be bound by any chain at all if we wish for salvation.

The difference between the good and the one above good is that they who do good things do them by thinking they are doing it. But they who are above the good or are free from chain of goof character do the good thing by thinking they are doing nothing. It’s their good character by the help of God residing in them what make them do that good thing. Just like God who doesn’t take any pride in being the creator of the universe, they too don’t take pride in any good thing they do. When a person achieves the ability to think like that, he gets free from the bondage of the three chains.

Once he is free from bondage, he is qualified for union with God.
